Course Overview
The Occupational Health and Safety Act, 85 of 1993 mandates employers where there are more than 5 employees present, to provide first aid training to their employees to acquire the necessary skills and equipment to respond to emergencies in the workplace.
Intermediate level first aid skills programme will improve the quality of emergency care provided to patients in situations where it is required. It will equip first aid responders with the necessary skills and knowledge to respond effectively to a range of medical, trauma, and environmental emergencies, while awaiting professional aid.
A qualified learner will exhibit the following key attributes, abilities, capabilities and attitudes:
- Treat and support life on severe injuries and medical conditions in the event of an emergency
- Stabilise the person’s condition and prevent further harm until more advanced medical treatment can be provided
- Manage the incident scene, coordinating with other responders and emergency services, and providing support to the causalities and their families
Learning Outcomes
For learners to be found competent on completion of this skills programme, they must demonstrate applied knowledge on the following exit level outcome:
- Applying principles of intermediate emergency first aid on an accident scene
- Applying secondary and ongoing patient assessments and deal with conditions requiring further aid care
- Using a variety of common instruments and processes to apply intermediate emergency first aid within the scope of practice
Programme Content
From this course, learners will be exposed to the overall broad areas so as to master the following tasks:
- Ensure the safety of self, affected persons and by standers at an incident scene and initiate immediate action to prevent loss of life
- Conduct professional secondary assessments of the affected persons in an emergency situation and apply appropriate first aid care
- Apply intermediate emergency first aid care to manage identified injuries and health conditions and prevent loss of life
